This month, we invite you to discover the Saint Sulpice church
2 rue Palatine – Saint-Germain-des-Près district in Paris (75006)
The Eglise Saint Sulpice is located on the Left Bank of Paris, in the Odéon district, just a few steps from the Luxembourg Gardens.
With its 120 meters in length, 30 meters in height under the vault and 57 meters in width,
it is the second church in Paris (behind the world-famous Notre-Dame de Paris.
The current building was built over several centuries from 1646 after Anne of Austria laid the first stone.
It was completed in 1870 after many construction stops.
Despite this, there are traces of religious buildings on this site since at least
the 10th century AD.
Because of the duration of construction and the different architects who succeeded one another at the head of the site, this church mixes Jesuit and more classical styles.
The main facade was built on the plans of a theater architect.
The style is therefore very original with its arcades and its two towers almost 70 meters high.
We will note the asymmetry of these towers : in fact the south tower is still unfinished today.
