Church of Our Lady of the Conception of Lisbon
The Church of Our Lady of the Conception of the Elderly, also known as the Church of the Holy House of Mercy of Lisbon, is a church located in the center of Lisbon, not far from the famous Praça do Comércio, in the parish of Santa Maria Maior.
Its rich façade, along with the Jerónimos Monastery and the Belém Tower, is one of the most representative Manueline-style buildings to have survived the great earthquake of 1755.
The church has been a Portuguese National Monument since 1910.
The church combines several architectural styles, resulting from the reconstruction carried out after the 1755 earthquake, when most of the city’s buildings were destroyed. The current layout is the result of the earthquake-era reconstruction of the former Church of Our Lady of Mercy of Lisbon, the seat of the country’s first Mercy Church.
The church’s interior was rebuilt in the 18th century and is adorned with azulejos and elaborate stucco.
