On the Château La Coste estate, located 20 minutes from Aix-en-Provence,
in Puy-Sainte-Réparade, is the chapel of Saint-Gilles.

At the highest point of a 200-hectare estate in a setting of vineyards, cypresses, umbrella pines, olive trees and oaks,

the chapel of Saint-Gilles, which dates from the 16th century, was notably a place
of passage for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela.

The building was in ruins when Tadao Ando* first came to Château La Coste.

He was seduced by the idea of giving it a second life.

A sheet metal and glass frame thus surrounds the restoration of the old chapel, creating a dialogue between authenticity and modernism.

Inside the building, the wooden benches, the altar and the glass cross recall the original function of the place.

Although referring to the Catholic religion, the space is intended to be universal
and was designed to invite those who wish to reflect, meditate and find peace.

*Tadao Ando is a Japanese architect, born on September 13, 1941 in Osaka.
