The Church of Saint-Roch was built between 1653 and 1722 according to the initial plans of Jacques Le Mercier.

At 126 meters long and primarily Baroque in style, it is one of the largest churches in Paris. The building has been listed as a historical monument since December 7,1914.

The church’s forecourt was the scene of fighting during the royalist uprising of 13 Vendémiaire, Year IV (October 5, 1795).

Pillaged during the French Revolution, the church recovered part of its heritage as well as numerous works of art from other Parisian churches.

Still open for worship, it is known as the “parish of artists,” in reference to those who were buried there or whose funerals were held there, but also because of the rich collection of works of art it houses and because it serves as the chaplaincy for performing artists.
